Kanye West’s highly anticipated album release for “Vultures 1,” a collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign, encountered unexpected obstacles in its distribution process, shedding light on the complexities of the music industry.
Distribution Challenges:
Initially seeking a distribution deal for the album, West turned to FUGA, a prominent business-to-business tech and label distribution platform. However, FUGA declined to release “Vultures 1” late last year, citing their judgment in the ordinary course of business.
Despite FUGA’s decision, the album was unexpectedly delivered through the platform’s automated processes on February 9, 2024, by a long-standing client of FUGA. This move violated the service agreement, prompting FUGA to work with its digital service provider (DSP) partners and the client to remove the album from their systems.
Industry Response and Challenges:
The album’s release faced additional challenges beyond distribution issues. Some potential partners reportedly hesitated to collaborate with West due to his past antisemitic comments, while concerns arose regarding streaming services’ support for the album.
Moreover, the release of “Vultures 1” was marred by delays, and following its debut, Spotify removed the track “Good (Don’t Die)” after a complaint from Donna Summer’s estate. The estate accused West of copyright infringement for allegedly using elements of Summer’s song “I Feel Love” without permission.
