“Paranoid” enters Spotify’s Billions Club, an elite group of works that have earned over one billion streams.
More than fifty years after its release, Black Sabbath’s iconic track “Paranoid” has achieved a remarkable milestone by joining Spotify’s prestigious Billions Club.
This elite collection honors works that have amassed over one billion streams on the platform.
A Classic of the Heavy Metal Genre
“Paranoid” stands as a cornerstone of the heavy metal genre. Serving as the title track of Black Sabbath’s 1970 LP, the song soared to No. 4 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart and No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100.
A Song Written in Minutes
Despite its enduring popularity, “Paranoid” was crafted swiftly in the studio. Bass player Geezer Butler revealed in a 2004 interview with Guitar World that the song was conceived in merely five minutes.
It was initially created as a three-minute filler for the album, with guitarist Tony Iommi devising the iconic riff while Butler quickly penned the lyrics. Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne famously read the lyrics as he sang.
A Storied Catalog and Rock Legacy
“Paranoid” is just one gem in Black Sabbath’s illustrious catalog, which has sold over 75 million records worldwide.
With more than 24 platinum albums in the U.K. and over 15 million albums sold in the U.S., the band’s impact on the rock and metal scene is undeniable.
Black Sabbath’s enduring influence earned them induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, with Metallica members doing the honors.
A Testament to Timeless Music
James Farrelly, BMG vice president, streaming U.K., reflects on the significance of “Paranoid” breaking the one billion streams mark on Spotify.
He emphasizes that great music transcends time, with new generations of fans continuing to discover and appreciate Black Sabbath’s legacy.
Despite being over fifty years old, “Paranoid” remains as fresh and vital as ever, ensuring a bright future for the U.K.’s iconic band.
