The collection lures motivation from the ‘Madchester’ era.
Manchester United has teamed up with legendary British band The Stone Roses to unveil a new clothing collection in collaboration with Adidas.
Launched this week, the partnership pays homage to the iconic ‘Madchester’ era of the late ’80s, closely associated with both the football club and the indie music scene.
Inspired by the Iconic ‘Madchester’ Era
The collection draws inspiration from The Stone Roses’ self-titled debut album released in 1989, embodying the spirit of the ‘Madchester’ era. The artwork featured on the album serves as the focal point for the range, celebrating the fusion of football and music culture that defined the time.
Key Piece: The Icon Jersey
At the heart of the collection is the Icon Jersey, meticulously crafted by guitarist John Squire. The jersey features the iconic red, white, and blue Adidas three stripes on the sleeves, alongside golden lettering of ‘The Stone Roses’ inside the collar.
Emblazoned with the words ‘This is the One’ and adorned with lemon slices replacing footballs, the jersey pays tribute to both the band’s legacy and the footballing heritage of Manchester United.
Lifestyle Range and Adapted United Badge
Complementing the jersey is a lifestyle range featuring items such as a black tracksuit, shorts, a long-sleeve t-shirt, a scarf, and the iconic bucket hat.
Each item proudly displays the adapted United badge alongside The Stone Roses’ lemons, symbolizing the union of football and music cultures.
Celebrating Joint Histories
Inigo Turner, Adidas’ Design Director, expressed the collection’s celebration of the intertwined histories of both Manchester United and The Stone Roses, emphasizing the fusion of football and musical culture they represent.
James Holroyd, Manchester United’s Chief Commercial Development Officer, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collection’s appeal to both older fans and the new generation of supporters.
Iconic Photo Shoot and Short Film
To mark the collection’s launch, players from Manchester United’s men’s and women’s teams participated in an iconic photo shoot reminiscent of legendary portraits of The Stone Roses.
Additionally, a short film titled ‘Roses Are Red’ was released, featuring appearances by football icons and band members alike, further commemorating the collaboration’s significance.
